A couple weeks ago, we packed up the fam and took a weekend road trip to Bedford, Virginia (a tiny little town) so that Zach could attend a disc golf seminar that he scored last minute tickets to. The classes were being held by Paul McBeth and Nate Sexton so, if you know anything about disc golf, you know what a big deal this was.
We (aka Zach) found and booked an airbnb in the Bluegrass Parkway. The view was just gorgeous. The owners of the Bed & Breakfast lived in a house nearby and had goats they let the kids visit with. There was also a large pond where the boys went fishing (Zachary went for the worms).
The first evening we were there, we went out to an incredible family owned Italian Restaurant. It was called Bella Italia. If you ever happen to find yourself in Bedford, be sure to stop by! You WILL NOT regret it! They even had gluten free pasta! I chose a seafood + pasta dish and it’s the best I’ve ever had.
The next morning, Zach headed out to his seminar and we had a slow morning at the place. We had decided ahead of time to take the kiddos to Seaquest in Lynchburg and Zach met up with us there. (Zachary is a stingray fanatic) Seaquest is located in the mall near Liberty University. It was seriously so much fun! As you know, my kids have a fairly large age gap (10, 3 and 1 1/2) and they all seemed to really enjoy it. Not only did everyone get to see numerous animals, we got to visit with SO MANY of them as well! You can purchase tokens at the admission counter that you use to buy treats to feed all the animals. The kids favorites were the stingrays (of course), tortoises and wallaby. We spent several hours at Seaquest before heading back to our rental. If you have very small children, you may want to take a stroller. We were worn out from all the chasing and carrying!
That evening we relaxed before heading home the next day. We had taken two cars down because Zach worked late and wanted us to have the freedom to go where we needed to while he was gone Saturday afternoon. On the way home, I took both boys with me and he took Reagan.
I had a bit of a head start on our return and set the GPS. Somewhere before the WV turnpike, Google maps decided that I wanted to take the scenic route home. Y’all, the backroads of West Virginia are no joke. We were outside of Fayetteville (New River Gorge area) on the winding hills and Zachary started mentioning that it was “hurting his belly.” Two twists later he vomited more than any toddler I’ve ever seen… all over our new car. It was everywhere. I pulled off the road as best I could and ran around to his side. While I was trying to come up with a plan as to what to do, I called Zach. He was 2 hours across the state from us. *huge sigh* Turns out, his GPS had sent him on an entirely different route and mine had somehow ended up on “no toll roads”. I stripped Zachary down to his pull-up and cleaned as much as I could with the quarter pack of wipes I had with me. All of the luggage was in the car Zach was driving, which left my little guy without clothes.
We cracked the windows and made the best of the remainder of our trip back. Jace was a total trooper and I couldn’t believe how great of a mood Z was in for what he had just gone through.
All in all our trip was great. I’d love to go back to the Bedford/Lynchburg area again. It was my first time seeing Liberty University and I would love to explore more of the town itself!
Have you ever been to that area or had a crazy road trip experience!?! Tell me about it in the comments below! 🤍 This one was definitely one for the books for us!
