Day trip to Red River Gorge

My friend Holli and I recently took a day trip to go and explore the Red River Gorge, located in Eastern Kentucky. The Red River Gorge is a canyon system that lies within the Daniel Boone National Forest on the Red River. We were really drawn to this area because it is known for its natural bridges (more than 100 sandstone arches), waterfalls and great hiking trails (over 60). While there, we visited two of the popular spots; Natural Bridge State Resort Park and Rock Bridge Loop Trail.

Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Before going, we looked online to see what areas may be of most interest to us. Natural Bridge stood out immediately! To be clear, Natural Bridge is technically not in the Red River Gorge Geological Area but in it’s own State Park. The Park has a large area for parking and small concession stand close by. You can choose to hike up (and down) to the Natural Bridge or take the Sky Lift. We decided to take the Sky Lift up, which leads you to a trail where you can walk on top of the arch. After spending time and taking pictures on top, we took Low Gap to view the sandstone Natural Bridge. Low Gap is very narrow and everyone has to take turns going in each direction. Natural Bridge was gorgeous, though! My pictures really don’t do it justice!

For the trip down, Holli and I decided we’d like to be a little more adventurous and not take the Sky Lift back. We ended up choosing to hike Rock Garden Trail. It was a great trail with many unique features! If you are not a fan of stairs or have trouble with them, this is not the trail for you. They are steep and many!

Rock Bridge Loop Trail

Rock Bridge Loop Trail sets WAY back in the woods! To get to the trail, you will need to drive many minutes out a graveled road. Luckily, the trail head is clearly marked so you at least know you are going the correct direction! Once you make it to the parking lot, you can choose between two paths to start your loop. This trail was much busier than the one we took at Natural Bridge. Rock Bridge Loop Trail is less that 2 miles long, but moderate. The loop descends through stunning scenery. Around halfway through you will arrive at Creation Falls and Rock Bridge. While we were there, many children were playing in the falls. There is a little beach next to it where most of the parents were camped out. Rock Bridge is nearby and is one of the larger arches. It sets over the water and is SO beautiful!

All in all we had such a wonderful time! I would highly recommend visiting this area and look forward to exploring the Red River Gorge Geological Area more!
